Jack Janney founded WJE in 1956 as a one-person engineering consultancy established to solve a problem. The Illinois Tollway Authority urgently needed engineering expertise for construction of the first phase of the Tri-State and Northwest tollways, and Jack was one of only a handful of engineers in the field with research experience in prestressed concrete.
That first project led to the next and then the next. Full-scale load testing after the 1964 World's Fair. Collapse investigation at Kansas City Hyatt Regency. Reconstruction of TWA Flight 800. Relocation of Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Stem-to-stern safety audit of the Big Dig. Failure investigation of Champlain Towers Condominium.
For nearly seventy years now, WJE has been called upon to solve some of the most interesting and challenging problems in the built world. The work we do today in the field, in the office, and in the lab continues to build on our founders’ legacy and vision for the future—a future that, in Jack's own words, is limitless.
