Watch this video case study to see how we helped to repair the Kirkfield Lift Lock, which is the second-tallest hydraulic lift lock in the world and one of only two lift locks in North America.
In September 2022, a mechanical malfunction in the north chamber shut down the lock, and custom parts dating back more than a century required repair. WJE engineers responded to the malfunction on an emergency basis to diagnose what went wrong. Based on findings from our comprehensive assessment of the mechanical and electrical systems, we developed repair recommendations and contract plans quickly.
We implemented a new system so the lift lock could open on time for the tourist season and avoid the significant economic consequences of a delay on the opening date.
In the paper below, engineers Robert McPherson and Yang Zheng discuss the electrical and controls portion of the project, including modifying the control system to allow single chamber automatic operation, installation and commissioning, and reversion to normal operation.
Presented at the HEAVY MOVABLE STRUCTURES, INC. 20th Biennial Movable Bridge Symposium.
