Experience

Thomas Breslin has more than twenty-five years of experience designing, documenting, and administering the construction of new buildings and additions and renovations to existing and historic structures. With a particular focus on complex facade assemblies, he has expertise with various materials, including brick and stone masonry, formed and plate aluminum panels, terra cotta, and aluminum composite material (ACM) cladding assemblies.

Before joining WJE, Mr. Breslin was an associate at Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Architects. His work focused on large, complex projects for institutional, corporate, and educational clients. He has been a guest juror at several universities, presented at industry conferences, and appeared on Detailed, the ARCAT podcast, discussing such topics as aluminum facades, bird-friendly frit, and electrochromic glazing.

  • Gutmann College House - Philadelphia, PA: Design-assist coordinator for terracotta and ACM prefabricated wall assemblies, membrane, paved terrace, and green roofs for 250,000square-foot residence hall at the University of Pennsylvania (LEED Silver certified, AIA Pennsylvania COTE Award, AIA Philadelphia Gold Medal, and GBCA Excellence in Craftsmanship Award) *
  • 277 Park Avenue - New York, NY: Design and design-assist coordination for fully customized curtain wall and canopy assemblies forming the new entry to Class-A skyscraper that included custom glass fiber reinforced gypsum ceiling and media wall with operable panel *
  • Valdez STEM and Innovation Center - Addison, TX: Design and construction administration for 67,000-square-foot laboratory and classroom building with mass timber structure and brick, curtain wall, and aluminum plate cladding (AIA Pennsylvania COTE Award) *
  • University of Pennsylvania, Lauder College House - Philadelphia: Detailing and construction administration for 198,000-square-foot residence with exterior materials including specially shaped brick, board-formed concrete, glue-laminated wood, zinc wall panel, and curtain wall (LEED Silver certified) *
  • Franklin Institute, Karabots Pavilion - Philadelphia, PA:  Professional services for 53,000-square-foot addition to National Register of Historic Places structure with exterior assemblies including limestone cladding, curtain wall, and custom kinetic artwork by Ned Kahn (LEED Silver certified) *
  • University of Pennsylvania, Arts Research and Culture House - Philadelphia: Renovation of 1927 Gothic Revival structure, including terra cotta chimneys, limestone carving, leaded windows, and slate roof *
  • Wilkes University, Cohen Science Center - Wilkes-Barre, PA: Design and construction administration of 72,000-square-foot chemistry, biochemistry, and earth science laboratory facility with envelope featuring brick masonry, metal panel, curtain wall, and green roofs (LEED certified) *
  • Duke University Law School - Durham, NC: Design and construction administration of addition with brick, limestone, zinc panel, and curtain wall elements *
  • Walnut West Library - Philadelphia, PA:  Restoration and reuse of 1906 Carnegie Library, the first glazed terra cotta facade in Philadelphia; evaluation and rehabilitation of original wood roof truss structure to become focal point of reading room (Preservation Alliance Achievement Award) *
